St. Stevie's no more

I discovered I wasn't able to make it to the SSG ceili last night in the late afternoon, when my Google recruiter piled a bunch of homework on me. Critical for me getting hired, yes? So no ceili. I dutifully informed [info]miss_emelia.

Apparently, no one else made it, either. Because, as Ammy found out a few hours later, the owners of St. Steven's Green made a snap decision last Sunday night to close the pub. Dez, their overworked manager (who's always been a great guy, btw, so we're not mad at him) simply didn't have time to call us in the rush to shut the venue down.

[info]capricious_k had a bunch of Google work to do too, so we stayed in on our respective laptops. Meanwhile, the large crowd of dancers and the GINORMOUS BAND that showed up had a guerrilla ceili on the streets of downtown Los Altos as a kind of wake for St. Stevie's. Alas that we couldn't be there, it sounded like a blast.

So the Tuesday night ceili is on hold until Ammy can find us a new venue. In the meantime, I'd like to thank all the folks who took my classes -- I learned a ton from you, and I hope you learned some stuff from me. And great big thanks and hugs to [info]miss_mimsy and [info]miss_emelia, my co-ceili-conspirators, for putting the whole shindig together.

We hope to be back soon, folks. Stay tuned.

I, personally, think it would r0x0r if you guys could swing an open-air ceili in downtown Los Altos all summer.

You might want to consider contacting the City of Los Alto Parks & Rec and see if this could be accomplished. Talk with them, see what permits might be necessary, and make it happen. Shouldn't be too difficult, other than the inability to serve beer/cider to the band, but that can be arranged separately.

Hell, that's why they invented the hip flask, right?

I'd totally groove with an open-air ceili. Or even a roving ceili... play some place until we get kicked out and then move on. (Just the little anarchist in my brain throwing out ideas.)

Hint: little kids' thermoses with cartoon characters are much more innocuous-looking than hip flasks...

I liked the open air ceili, it was much fun. Food was had from various shops in the area. People came by and watched, at some points we had a small crowd. The only thing different would be that it got dark at 9:00, relatively early, so people would have to expect to stop earlier than usual (though Ammy put on her CD dance mix and we stayed until 10:00, so it wasn't that dark)

Support your venue
In sort of a cross post, people going to the Plough should take a lesson from this. We are very fortunate to have had the Plough for like 20 years now. When you are there, buy something from them. It helps keep them in business. :)

Re: Support your venue
I just wish the Plough bar mistress wouldn't presume that we're NOT going to buy things - it's rather insulting to be holding money in plain sight and be ignored because you have beads of sweat on your forehead. That aside, I make an effort to buy something everytime I'm there, and leave a nice tip at the bar.

hmm, that would be annoying, personally never had that happen, it's odd since if you're just dancing, you don't even need to be close to the bar at all. I get food and drink before the actual dancing starts and get good service from the kitchen guy and the early bartender women, (who doesn't even ask, she just gets what I always order :) )

I've had mixed reactions from the Plough staff, but it's been a long time since I went on an even-quasi-irregular basis, I'm not sure how valid that is.

Usually, though, they're at least neutral to take your money. I think it's more about attitude and respect.

A cursory search...
Occasional outdoor events, INCLUDING dances, are exempt from Los Altos's noise ordinance limits (i.e. how long you can make noise and at what decibels), "provided such events are conducted pursuant to a permit or license issued by the city relative to the staging of such events."

IOW, their municipal code does consider that there will be occasional outdoor 'fests such that you can get a permit. Probably Parks and Rec issues them.

I'll give a big, fat second to that!! Some lawyers use their powers for good, bring sunshine to where there was only darkness, and just generally make the world a happier, less stress-infested place. Some lawyers ROCK!!

Not namin' any names, of course... :)

I can think of two options:

1) Talk to the folks at the Kings Head. They were very open to the idea of hosting dancing when Will and I tried it a few years back. The thing that killed that attempt was the lack of regular dancers. It's technically under new ownership, but the older owner is still there every time I go in, and nothing much has changed, so they'd probably still be up for it.

2) Convince Ammy that she doesn't really want to buy a house, and that she'd much rather own a pub. With Rachel managing it, Fred running the website, and Rick & Co running their business out of the now-wired upstairs, that place would rock! I've always wanted to see what a cyber-pub would look like. :)
